Svalbard Here We Come

As our brilliant nephew Keith posted on Facebook this morning, "For those who observe, Happy New Year." I for one do not observe and thus appreciated his nod to all free-thinkers who believe it's all one day;  that today is just another Monday except they aren't going to pick up our trash.

That being the case I will jump right into another subject and say that next summer (August, or maybe June) my husband and I will be joining two adventurous friends on an exciting trip to a Norwegian archipelago located between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

It's a place with no Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts, in fact no chain restaurants of any kind, although there is apparently sushi. From all reports the available food is bad, with nary a fresh veggie or piece of fruit for miles, in fact for thousands of miles. Somehow the island's 2,000 residents manage to stay alive despite the polar bears who roam around looking for food, and they're not looking for veggies or fruit.

Certainly it's not all gloom and doom: there are also walruses, puffins, reindeer and Arctic foxes sheltering among the glaciers and frozen tundra. The Northern Lights are visible during winter, and summer brings the Midnight Sun, with sunlight 24/7, so at the time of our visit it literally will be all one day. (Note to self: Pack sleep mask.)
